Your Bank Reconciliation Is Three Weeks Behind Because Someone Forgot to Download the CSV.

Your bank reconciliation is three weeks behind. Not because the numbers are wrong. Because someone forgot to download the bank statement file.

It was available on January 5th. Today is January 24th. Between those two dates: three invoices were paid, two were not, and your accounting shows a healthy cash position that your actual bank balance does not share. You will find this out when you try to pay a supplier. The download was one click. Nobody made it.

This happens in hundreds of thousands of French businesses every month. Not because of negligence. Because a process that depends on human memory to initiate will fail at the rate of human memory.

What "Bank Reconciliation" Actually Means

"Reconciliation" is a technical word for a simple idea: matching what your bank says to what your accounting says. When they match, you know your real financial position — how much cash you actually have, which invoices have been paid, and whether that supplier payment you are considering will land safely. When they do not match, you have a liability you do not know about or an asset you have not captured.

Running your business with a three-week reconciliation lag means every decision you make about cash — paying suppliers, accepting new clients, deferring purchases — is based on a financial picture that is 21 days old.

Three weeks of unreconciled transactions is not a reconciliation problem. It is a reminder that any process requiring a human to download a file will eventually fail at the worst possible moment.

How the Failure Compounds

At stake is more than an outdated cash figure. In France, your TVA — value-added tax — declaration is calculated from your actual business transactions and filed to the DGFiP (France's tax authority). File from incomplete reconciliation data and the declared amount is wrong. A wrong TVA triggers an adjustment notice. That notice can open an audit of the last three years of your filings.

There is also the FEC — the standardized accounting file every French business must produce within 15 days of receiving a tax audit notice. If your reconciliation is six weeks behind when that request arrives, you have 15 days to catch up, complete your ledger, and format the file to government specification — while continuing to run your business. Failure to comply: minimum €5,000 penalty.

One forgotten bank statement download can start that chain.

Marc's January

Marc runs a small printing business in Toulouse. On January 15th, his accounting software showed €11,000 in available cash. He paid a supplier €4,200.

His last bank import had been December 20th. In the gap, a €6,800 tax payment had cleared on January 8th. His actual balance before the supplier payment: €4,200. After: €0, with an automatic lease debit scheduled for January 17th.

Overdraft: €2,100. His bank's fee: €35 per day until cleared. Four days to transfer funds: €140 in fees, a week of calls to the bank, accountant, and supplier. The ledger was wrong. The decision was based on that ledger. The cost was €140 and a very unpleasant week.

What EU Law Has Required Since 2018

Here is what most small business owners have never been told: since 2018, EU law has required every EU bank to provide free, automatic access to your account transaction data for authorized software.

PSD2 — the EU Payment Services Directive, second version — created that obligation. It applies to BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, CIC, Caisse d'Épargne, Banque Populaire. Every major French retail bank. By law, they must make your transaction data available to authorized software automatically — not as a service they choose to offer, but a legal requirement.

Powens, a French company authorized by ACPR (France's banking authority) to connect software to bank accounts, links to over 1,800 European banks and delivers your transactions to accounting software within 24 hours of each transaction clearing. Bridge by Bankin' covers the same major French retail banks.

An automatic connection to your bank transactions has been legally mandated and technically available since 2018. Nobody put a notice on the download page to tell you.

Who Benefits from the Manual Status Quo

Pennylane, one of France's most modern accounting tools, raised €175 million in January 2026 at a €3.6 billion valuation. Their plans start at €49 per month, partly justified by "automated bank feeds" as a premium feature.

That underlying bank data is free under PSD2 law. Powens and Bridge deliver it for fractions of a cent per transaction. Premium pricing on "bank connectivity" exists because most small business owners do not know the legal right to that data has existed since 2018. The markup is built on a knowledge gap, not a technology gap.

We use the same PSD2 infrastructure. We charge nothing for it.

Amelie's Mornings

Amelie is a freelance consultant in Nantes. She connected her business bank account to Liberté via PSD2 six months ago. It took two minutes. She has not downloaded a bank statement since.

Every morning, yesterday's transactions are automatically imported and categorized. Cash position accurate to within 24 hours. When she considered an early supplier payment to capture a 2% discount last week, she checked in 30 seconds — not against a three-week-old snapshot — against data from yesterday. She took the discount.

Monthly reconciliation review now takes her four minutes. The automatic feed handles the data transfer. Her judgment handles the exceptions — transactions that need a category. Ninety minutes per month reduced to four. Not because she is more disciplined. Because the human is no longer in the data transfer loop.

On the Question of Security

Some business owners hesitate before connecting bank account data to third-party software. Fair question. PSD2 connections are read-only: authorized connectors like Powens and Bridge can read your transactions and cannot initiate payments or move money. Both are regulated by ACPR. Consent can be revoked at any time.

Consent renewal under PSD2 is required every 90 days — a regulation designed to ensure you actively want the connection to continue. Liberté handles the renewal automatically: a one-click confirmation sent two days before expiry, and your daily feed continues without interruption.

Running on Real Information

Entrepreneurs who know their cash position to within 24 hours make better financial decisions than those running on data three weeks old. Supplier discounts, client credit terms, bridging decisions: all depend on actual information, not remembered estimates.

Anyone who has ever thought "there must be a better way than downloading a bank file every month" was right. PSD2 mandated the better way in 2018. Eight years later, most French small businesses are still doing the download because the free automatic alternative was never made accessible to them — just sold back as a premium feature.

Liberté connects your bank accounts via PSD2 as a free, default feature. One authorization flow. Two minutes. From that point forward, Marc's January belongs to someone else.
