There Are 2,400 Expert-Comptables in Paris. 2,100 of Them Recommend Sage. That's Distribution, Not Merit.

You were setting up your business. You asked your accountant what software to use. They said Sage. You said fine. You've been paying €150 per month since then.

Comparing it to alternatives has never felt urgent — it works, and switching sounds complicated. Here's what that recommendation was actually based on, and what exists now that didn't exist when it was made.

The Question Every New Business Owner Asks

"What accounting software should I use?"

It's a reasonable question to ask your accountant. They manage dozens of clients' books. They file declarations on multiple platforms. They know the French regulatory environment. They're the expert you're paying to keep you compliant.

What determines their answer isn't usually an evaluation of alternatives. It's a combination of three things: which platform they trained on, which platform the other 40–60 clients in their portfolio use, and whether the software vendor pays their practice a commission on each subscription.

Sage France has 300,000+ business customers and trained a generation of expert-comptables on its platform at low or no cost. For an accountant who spent three years learning Sage's interface, who has 45 clients running on Sage, and who earns a reseller commission — which can reach 10–20% of each client's subscription — recommending Sage is a rational reflection of their professional reality. It may have nothing to do with your business needs.

How the Recommendation Channel Works

Sage doesn't primarily sell to entrepreneurs — it sells to accountants, who then recommend the product to their clients. The accountant is the customer. You, the entrepreneur, are the end user. And Sage earns a 94% annual renewal rate because the cost of leaving — for the accountant, not for you — is what keeps everyone on the platform.

By Sage's own account, that high renewal rate reflects how difficult it is to switch away, not how satisfied customers are. Once an accountant has 40 clients on Sage and has built their entire workflow around it, migrating even one client means exporting data, converting file formats, learning a new interface, and rebuilding internal processes. Most accountants won't do it unless the client insists.

The channel feeds itself. More accountants trained on Sage means more entrepreneurs on Sage means more renewal revenue means more budget for training new accountants. A restaurant owner who asks their accountant for advice enters this cycle without knowing it exists.

What the Costs Look Like Over Time

€150 per month. Twelve months a year. Five years. That's €9,000 in software subscription fees for a recommendation made in one conversation, based on the accountant's professional environment rather than an independent comparison.

Add the advisory fees: an expert-comptable for a small SARL (a common French business structure for limited liability companies) typically charges €1,500–3,500 per year. Over five years: €7,500–17,500. A meaningful portion of that total covers routine tasks — filing the DSN (the monthly payroll declaration your company submits for each employee), pre-hiring declarations, bank matching — that platform software now handles automatically through direct connections to government systems.

The bakery owner who accepted Sage four years ago has paid approximately €7,200 in software subscriptions since that initial recommendation. They have never been told about free alternatives. Neither has their accountant, in most cases.

The Disclosure Gap

France's Ordre des Experts-Comptables — the professional body that regulates accountants — requires members to act in their clients' best interests and disclose material conflicts of interest. Whether software commissions count as a material conflict under that standard is genuinely unclear. Many accountants say yes and disclose proactively. Others see the reseller arrangement as a standard business practice that doesn't require client disclosure.

No French accounting software vendor includes their accountant commission structure in the marketing materials delivered to entrepreneurs. Ask the question directly — "does my accountant receive any commission from Sage if I subscribe?" — and most accountants will answer honestly. The challenge is knowing to ask.

Banking went through a parallel transition. Before 2018, French bank advisors recommended investment products that earned them the highest commissions, without being required to disclose those commissions to clients. EU regulation changed that by mandating explicit disclosure of financial product commissions. Accounting software commissions don't yet have equivalent rules.

This Is Not an Attack on Your Accountant

Expert-comptables who recommend Sage are not the problem. Most are skilled professionals who keep their clients compliant in one of the most demanding regulatory environments in Europe. Many recommend Sage in good faith, based on genuine familiarity and a real belief that it works.

The issue is structural: when the entire recommendation system is built on vendor-funded training and reseller commissions, that system will consistently produce the same recommendation — regardless of whether alternatives are better or cheaper for the client. The entrepreneur pays the cost. The vendor retains the customer. The accountant manages a consistent portfolio. Everyone benefits except the entrepreneur who never got to compare.

An accountant who independently evaluated a free alternative would be a different kind of ally. The question is whether they've had the opportunity.

What Exists Now

Liberté is a free, complete business administration platform — hiring, HR, payroll, accounting, bank reconciliation, government declarations. Connected directly to the same government portals that Sage connects to: net-entreprises.fr for payroll and pre-hiring declarations (the DSN and DPAE filings — miss a pre-hiring declaration and the fine is €1,068 per undeclared employee), impots.gouv.fr for tax declarations, and bank accounts via open banking — the regulation that requires banks to share your transaction data with authorized software, at no charge. Same compliance coverage. No monthly subscription.

Free the way Android is free: the platform is the infrastructure, open to everyone. Revenue comes from a marketplace of optional paid services — AI-powered analytics, CRM, and more — through commissions. The base platform costs nothing.

For accountants, Liberté becomes a workspace for managing multiple clients — the same role Sage fills today, without the licensing cost. Routine compliance tasks — payroll declarations, pre-hiring filings, bank matching — run automatically through government connections. The accountant's value shifts to what actually requires their expertise: tax planning, business structuring, strategic financial advice.

The Question to Ask

Before your next renewal, ask your accountant one question: "Have you evaluated any alternatives to Sage for a business at my scale?"

Most will say they haven't — and that's an honest answer. Evaluating software alternatives for each client isn't a standard part of French accounting practice. The point isn't to challenge their past recommendation. It's to understand what it was based on, so you can decide whether to stay or to compare.

Liberté launches Q2 2026, France first. Free platform, direct government connections, no subscription. When your accountant encounters it — and they will, this year — the conversation about your current €150-per-month subscription will have different numbers in it.

Those numbers could mean €1,800 back in your business each year. For many entrepreneurs already working seven days a week, that's also time — hours no longer spent managing software invoices, navigating admin portals, or wondering whether the tool their accountant picked five years ago is still the right one. That time belongs to you. So does the choice.
